So I tuned in last night to watch the Grammys big mistake. It was like watching a train wreck I couldn't take my eyes away from it. I'm not really sure where to start with this because I have so much to say on this topic both good and bad. I will just list my rants and raves about the whole thing from start to finish.
1. Police Reunion-I was very excited for this. I'm a big fan of this awesome trio who helped shape my musical sensibilities as a youngster growing up in the 'burbs. That was until I saw them on stage last night. What the hell happened to Sting? In his defense he does look the best out of all of them, but come on lay off the tantric lifestyle-eat a steak and drink some beer. He no longer looks like a rocker, but rather a yoga instructor who has been in the down-ward dog pose for too long. If you want to see Sting rock the house rent his concert flick Bring on the Night-it is amazing. The band he had for that tour was amazing Kenny Kirkland and Branford Marsalis just to name a few. And the other two members of this trio Stewart Copeland and Andy Sumner I just don't know. One last thought on the police why the song "Roxanne" when there are so many better ones. I guess I should quit bitchin' it could have been "Every Breath You Take"-GROSS. So I hear they are doing a reunion tour I can't wait to see how much those tickets are-who am I kidding I will end up going just to say I have seen them.
2. Tony Bennett and Stevie Wonder- Please don't ever thank Target again for being your best sponsor. I think those 2 were up way past their bed times.
3. Mary J. Blige- Love Her- but I could do without the thanking of Jesus. I liked her bad ass attitude on Share My World-( Little Kim took good notes on how to be a pain in the ass diva from Mary J.) She has a voice that is so amazing that I can almost get past the Jesus issue. Go get any of here albums you won't be disappointed.
4. Corrine Bailey Rae, John Legend, John Mayer-My favorite set of the whole night. All 3 of these artists are amazingly talented and deserve your undivided attention.
5. The Dixie Chicks- I have no idea what to even say about them. I think they are talented no doubt but not that talented.
6. Justin Timberlake- I LOVE HIM. I can't help it the boy can boogie. In my eyes he can do no wrong.
7. The Eagles Tribute- I hope I never hear another Eagles song again
8. The cool awards are given out in some back room off of Sunset Blvd. with no windows and no air conditioning.
When I was a kid they presented all of the awards on TV. I remember seeing Sir. George Solti pick up a Grammy and seeing Miles Davis. Being exposed to all of these different genres on TV (Mr. Chuck and Dr. Lunk deserves thanks for this also) made me appreciate the importance of music. It also helped me to have an open mind about things and be able to take chances in life. If you don't try it you never know if you are going to like it. So all I can say is if you have kids in your house or nieces and nephews do them a favor expose them to any and all different kinds of music, art, books, and life- they may not thank you now, but they will later. And if I find out any of my readers buy their music from Target there will be hell to pay at a later date.
That Eagles tribute was painful. It made me question the purpose, function, and yes, even the necessity of pop music. I need to hear some justification pretty darn soon.
