    Paste rated this album #2 in their best of 2006. I gave them a listen off of that review and let me tell you they rock. What I dig most about them is the fact they sound like a drunken Springsteen. This album is loaded with a ton of heavy guitar riffs and lyrics you can't understand. RUN DON'T WALK to your nearest record store and pick this bad oscar up.

Nocturnal Listening

220pxeverythingbutthegirl I dig Everything But The Girl.  Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt make up this very talented duo.   E.B.T.G. was considered part of the jazz/pop movement that  came out of the UK in the  early to mid  80s.  Sade and  The Style  Council  (Paul  Weller) are also consider to be sophisti-pop  bands.  Thorn's voice coupled with Watt's ear for arrangement make these guys great.  From 1984-1994  E. B.T.G  released  9 albums  all of which featured  shimmering pop sounds with  beautiful  acoustic guitars and Thorn's deeply soothing voice.  Some  of the best stuff they've put out are covers.  In  1992 they  put out a  cover of  Cyndi  Lauper's   "Time  After  Time"  which is absolutely beautiful.  In 1994 with the release of Amplified Heart their music took an interesting turn.  It moved away from the acoustic sound that had been their trademark into the realm of electronica.  With the remixed version of the single "Missing"  E.B.T.G. exploded onto the mainstream music scene.  I heard this song everywhere. It was about this time that I started getting my groove on to them.  Thorn did some work with Massive Attack which helped them incorporate more of an electronica sound.  Their next two albums Walking Wounded and Temperamental, showed the band's musical progress. Watt has become a notable dance music producer and DJ in the years following the release of these two albums.  He has done some work with one of my personal favorites Beth Orton.  Thorn just put out a solo album at the beginning of March.  The duo are busy these days raising their three children out of the spotlight.
I like to listen to these E.B.T.G late at night.  I don't know what it is about them, but about 2 AM they sound perfect to me.  I will kick it off with Amplified Heart and end it with Temperamental. I especially like the ambient sounding tunes which showcase Thorn's amazing bluesy voice.  Go out and pick yourself up a sweet set of headphones and sit in a dimly lit room in the early morning hours and give Everything But The Girl a listen.  It is a righteous experience.  Enjoy "Mirrorball" and "Low Tide Of The Night" from Everything But The Girl.
