While reading Salon today and I came across an article in which the developers of an on-line video game based on "The Lord of The Rings Trilogy" wouldn't allow same sex marriage in their game. Also, a hobbit and a dwarf couldn't shack up either. This is bullshit. I saw all three of these movies and yes they scared the living shit out of me, but I always thought there was some kind of hidden love affair between Frodo and Sam. Throw in the Enya music from the last one and you have a great love story. This is just my opinion.
I thought the whole purpose of role playing games was that you could be anything you wanted. It was your game. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. I had no idea that such homophobia lurked in the on line gaming community. You can read the whole article here.
I've never been a gamer. Sure, I like to play "Guitar Hero" and "Hot Shots Golf", but give me some struggle in fantasy land with unicorns, crossbows, battle axes, witches, ogres -I'm completely lost. I need a ball in a video game. Most of the gamers I know are boys. Sorry ladies I know you are out there, I just don't know any of you. These boys are pretty liberal when it comes to the concept of same sex marriage whether it be in the real world or fantasy land. I think these boys are this way because they themselves are pretty sexually ambiguous. All they want to do is save their kingdom and ride off into the sunset on their unicorn. So I was pretty surprised when I read this article. Any thoughts on this?
