Dinosaur Jr. has reunited and released Beyond. This is some good news. J Mascis the king of distortion is back, stronger than ever. I first started listening to these guys in the early 90s with the release of Green Mind. I know this next statement is going to offend a lot of people, but I have to say it. I prefer Dinosaur Jr. to Nirvana. There I have said it. I have waited over 10 years to let that out.
There is something about Mascis's voice that just makes me love this band. His voice is not perfect, but it fits in so well with all the distortion and feedback that I can't imagine anyone else fronting this band. Dinosaur Jr. has always been known for putting out albums that have a Spector like "Wall of Sound" to them. Layers upon layers of guitars piled on top of one another to create really complex instrumentation. On top of that he puts on some blistering guitar solos that would put Eddie Van Halen to shame. Mascis might very well be a modern day Phil Spector. I like these songs, but the one's I really like are the bare boned stripped down pure pop songs that can be found on every single one of their albums. I believe the they will be swinging thought NYC at the end of May. I'm gonna try to check them out. I'm getting old and not sure if my ears can handle all that feedback. I could just buy earplugs, but that would just be too easy. Beyond was released on Tuesday and it is awesome. From Beyond enjoy "This Is All I Came To Do" and "We're Not Alone".
